Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
“I’m dreaming of a White Christmas…” I’m singing any song I can think of that is cold. Weather forecasters called for all-time hot temperatures, and they weren’t kidding.
Here in Coupeville on Whidbey Island, where the average summer temps are in the 70s, today’s temps reached 100 on our outdoor thermometer. Local televisions stations reported 95.

Other cities in the area are much HOTTER.
- Seattle — 107
- Sammamish (where we moved from) –107
- Federal Way — 100
- Bremerton — 108
- Olympia — 107
- Portland — 110
Get the idea? It’s hot here, baby. The national news reports that Washington is experiencing the hottest weather ever. Well, isn’t that swell? That’s one statistic I’d rather not read in Guinness.
According to the weathercasters on local television, temps tomorrow on the mainland will be slightly lower. Still, the weather service continues to have extreme heat warnings through tomorrow tonight. Trying to sleep tonight looks problematic with temps remaining in the 90s and 80s.
Meanwhile, the Weather Channel predicts a return more “normal” temps on Whidbey — the 70s as a weather front moves in. That much of a drop in temps don’t seem logical. I’m going with my Missourian pessimism–show me.
One TV reporter actually tried to fry an egg on the sidewalk. Hmm, an interesting experiment, but it’s too hot outside to try.
I’m getting no work done this week–it’s just too hot to think coherently. I feel like a slug. And it’s so hard to sleep. How did I ever manage at college in mid-Missouri where these temps were the norm, and of course, there was no AC in the dorms forty years ago.
What’s the temp where you are? What are you doing to stay cool? And how are you spending your days and nights?
Try to think cool thoughts and try singing winter songs.
