His brother, Tom, walked alongside Dan for thirty months during his terminal illness, which ended in medically assisted death. The recent Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe vs.Wade further focuses on the need to protect our rights for patient-directed healthcare.

 is a retired seminary professor who is a retreat leader and spiritual director. He and his wife, Lin, live in the Seattle area. He grew up in the Midwest, the oldest of ten siblings.
